From March 27–29, the theatre program at Crandall University transported audiences into a world of mystery and intrigue with its production of The Real Sherlock Holmes, a clever and suspenseful play by Canadian writer Peter Colley. This production showcased the talents of student and staff actors and crew, who worked diligently to bring the playwright’s vision to life on stage.

One of the most notable aspects of this year’s production was its scale. Featuring the largest cast assembled by Crandall Theatre since the COVID-19 pandemic, the play marked an important milestone in the program’s continued growth and return to full-scale performances. The expanded cast contributed to a richer, more dynamic staging and allowed more students, as well as two staff members, to take part in the production.

Regarded as one of Crandall University’s most ambitious plays to date, The Real Sherlock Holmes also pushed creative boundaries in its staging and technical design. The production incorporated elements never before used in a Crandall Theatre performance, including atmospheric effects such as a smoke machine. In a particularly innovative moment, one of the actors performed from a balcony in Brinton Auditorium—a space never previously utilized in a Crandall production—adding a new dimension to the audience’s experience. Another standout element of the production was its original score, composed entirely by student Brandon Foote.

The three-day run saw a total attendance of 419 people, drawing students, staff, faculty, and members of the broader community.
