Crandall University is pleased to announce that The Honourable B. Richard Bell, KC, who recently retired as Chief Justice of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada, will be teaching a 5-week course at Crandall’s Sussex campus starting this November. The course, “Managerial Ethics and Decision Making,” is part of Crandall’s Master of Management program.
This marks a return of sorts, as he previously taught Business Law in Crandall’s Business Administration program prior to his first appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick in 2006. He later served on the Federal Court and New Brunswick Court of Appeal.
Bell holds Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and he was awarded Queen’s Counsel status in 2004.
“I am delighted to be returning to Crandall, following my service on the Bench,” stated Bell. “It is my hope and prayer that my academic qualifications and professional experience will enable me to facilitate first rate exchanges among my students.”
Bell practiced law for approximately 25 years in all levels of court, including appearances before the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. Beyond serving Canadians both domestically and internationally, Bell acted as counsel to the Christie Inquiry into labour relations in New Brunswick.
In the field of international law, Hon. Bell represented a senior officer before the Arar Inquiry; adjudicated on issues concerning the extraterritorial application of Canadian law and international treaties; and, adjudicated issues concerning war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Throughout his extensive career, Bell gained specialized knowledge of a wide spectrum of law, including labour and employment, criminal, indigenous, immigration, international humanitarian, constitutional, and military.
Crandall President Dr. Bruce Fawcett commented, “We are pleased to have someone of Richard Bell’s status contribute to our Master of Management program. His experience and expertise will further enrich an already strong group of instructors who bring significant international and national expertise to our graduate students.”
