Rev. Dr. Jim Rhyno – Featured Alum

Rev. Dr. Jim Rhyno

BA in Biblical Studies, Class of ’85

I grew up in a large family near Yarmouth, NS. I began to sense a call to ministry when I was a teenager. Around this time, my pastor asked me to preach for our Youth Service and then helped me to put together my first sermon. He began to encourage me to consider ministry. Through prayer and talking with family members, that sense of call was confirmed. I was influenced by a close friend, as well as by Dr. Ralph Richardson when he spoke at a youth retreat in my senior year of High School, to attend Atlantic Baptist College—now Crandall University.

I received my B.A. in Biblical Studies from Atlantic Baptist College in 1985 where I also meet my wife, Ruth Anne. We were married in 1988. Ruth Anne has a B.Sc. (Honours) in psychology and biology, as well asher B. Ed, both from Acadia University. We have 3 children, Emily (B.A., 2013 Crandall University), Julia, and James. I received my M.Div. (Honours) from Acadia Divinity College in 1989 and have been in full time ministry from then until April 2023. I earned my DTH in Practical Theology from the University of South Africa in 2015. My research focused on common characteristics of church planting situations in the Maritime Provinces of Atlantic Canada and included pastors from several denominations.

Ruth Anne has taught in the public school system, but stepped away from school when our children were young. She ran her own music studio, homeschooled our children, taught in a private Christian school and is now teaching in the public system again as a Learning Support Teacher. She has always been a constant support and coworker in my pastoral ministry.

My experience at Crandall (ABC) prepared me for life and ministry by helping me to develop critical thinking skills, a strong work/study ethic, and by giving me a well-rounded education experience. The B.A. in Biblical Studies prepared me well for future educational endeavours, as well as for the understanding and preaching of God’s Word throughout my ministry. Pastoral Ministry has taken us to pastorates in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including, Third Horton United Baptist Church (Canaan, NS); Calvary Baptist Church (North Sydney, NS); Beechwood United Baptist Church (Beechwood, NB); Foundation UBC (Porters Lake, NS); Grand Falls and Ortonville Baptists Churches (NB); Nackawic Baptist Church (NB); and KemptvilleUnited Baptist Church (Yarmouth County, NS). I was privileged to serve 6 years on the Board of Governors of Crandall University and 4 years on the Board of Canadian Baptist Ministries, as well as other boards and committees of our Baptist Association and Convention.

Throughout my pastoral ministry, along with regular pastoral responsibilities, I have been focused on the importance of discipleship, family ministry, and working with men to encourage them in their faith. My passion for mentoring has grown through the years and has been the foundation of spiritual growth in church as well as my own life and the lives of others. Having said that, I have felt that my efforts have been, at times, in need of focus and training. My desire has grown for developing both mentoring and peer mentoring relationships.

In April of 2023, after 37 years of part time and full time pastoral ministry, I retired from pastoral ministry and began seeking the Lord’s direction for the future. I began to sense a calling to mentoring and Bible education at a local level. Through this time of searching, I was led to MentorLink Canada and have been privileged to be called by MentorLink to serve in the region of Atlantic Canada. The support and training from MentorLink has been encouraging and essential as I transition into this new focus in ministry. I look forward to serving the Lord by assisting others in deepening their walk with Christ and to being strengthened in my own walk with Him.
