Education Faculty Grows with Addition of New Member

Crandall University’s Professional Programs division is pleased to announce the newest member of the Faculty of Education: Dr. Tye Campbell. Dr. Campbell earned his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education from The University of Alabama. During his time at The University of Alabama, he worked as a graduate teaching/research assistant, where his responsibilities included teaching courses to mathematics and science teacher candidates and assisting with educational research projects.

Prior to pursuing his PhD, Tye taught middle school and high school mathematics for five years in rural, urban, and private school settings. He enjoys teaching mathematics because it provides students with opportunities to explore and find creative solutions to complex problems. Tye believes that all students can meaningfully participate in mathematics, rejecting the notion that some people are “good at math” while others are not. He strives to help students develop a growth mindset, or a belief that they can learn and enjoy mathematics.

Tye’s teaching experiences led him to pursue research on mathematics teaching and learning. In particular, he researches how students develop mathematical learning opportunities through peer collaboration. He has published several research articles in journals such as International Journal of Educational Research, Research in Mathematics Education, and Investigations in Mathematics Learning. He aspires to continue his line of research at Crandall and collaborate with local school partners to improve mathematics teaching and learning for all students.

When asked about welcoming Tye to the team, Crandall’s Dean of Professional Programs Dr. Roger Russell expressed his excitement at Campbell’s significant mathematical experience and passion. “We are thrilled to be welcoming someone with as much mathematical expertise as Tye. Knowing his teaching background and research focuses, I am confident that he will fit into his role perfectly.”

Tye hails from Alabama, USA and will be coming to Moncton this summer with his wife (Caitie), daughter (Shailaja), and dog (Faye). They are excited about their upcoming move and the opportunity to contribute to the mission of Crandall University!

Some courses that Tye will be teaching are Math Education and Struggling Learners in Mathematics and Science Education, starting with the first sections of Math Education and Science Education this fall 2021.
